PVDF a better choice for Stainless steel components?

Stainless Steel has long been the obvious choice in all industries where chemical resistance, and entirely repeatable processes are critical. It’s shiny, attractive and it’s reliable. However, for a great number of applications f.e.in the Food industry (FDA approved products), (Petro) chemical industry, Semicon and medical industry, PVDF provides the same or better performance — often at a lower cost ( 1/3 to ¼ of the Stainless Steel price), short delivery times, and with reduced assembly time. Your total cost of ownership will drop from 100% to 25%.

The applications are leading in answering the question which material is most appropriate. Important is understanding the properties of the materials. First, what is the pressure? In many cases PVDF is a perfect alternative for Stainless Steel In 90% of the applications the choice for stainless steel is unnecessary and the more expensive solution.

Another important consideration is temperature. What is the temperature of the fluid? Not everyone is aware of the fact that PVDF can withstand temperatures ranging from -40°C to 100°C up to 10 bar with a 3 fold security. To give an indication; 80 % of all application fall within this criteria.

Finally, what are the chemical properties of the fluid that will go through the fitting? PVDF has a high resistance against chemicals often even better than stainless steel (316 TI ( 1.4571) or  316 (1.4401) or 316 L ( 1.4404))

Cost compare PVDF and SS

Comparing costs

For any given fluid that is compatible with stainless steel or PVDF, PVDF can deliver significant price savings. Also the total assembly time can be reduced by one quarter of the time.

PVDF clearly leads the way for ease of fabrication — translating immediately into lower costs and shorter lead times. It can be molded and fabricated into a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles all with less difficulty and expense than when working with stainless steel. It can be delivered in the sizes 4-16 mm combined with other components in PVDF like air headers and ball valves

PVDF other advantages

Stainless steel is often subject to adverse chemical reactions. These areas can become nucleation sites for bacteria, quickly contaminating the contents. This is especially detrimental in the pharmaceutical and food industries, where companies must demonstrate to the FDA a 100% repeatable cleaning process.

PVDF also offer superior performance in ultrapure water (UPW) applications. Stainless steeloften fails in such applications, as the ionized water draws ions out of the steel, creating ferric oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. Plastic is chemically inert so it is immune to corrosion.

The safe choice?

Stainless steel has a large following in industries. Sometimes it’s just force of habit and the feeling it’s a safer bet, and safer is better. Ultimately, when you start to look at the options, PVDF might even be the better choice. If you make informed decisions and employ PVDF where it is well suited, you can save considerable time and money. With in the end, staying ahead of the competition.

Why PVDF?

  • Low price
  • Short delivery times
  • Total cost off ownership will drop from 100% to 25 %
