DEFINITION OF A QUICK CONNECT COUPLING / DISCONNECT COUPLING
A device that can facilitate the connection and disconnection of an attachment to a power source, without the use of tools, while maintaining system integrity.
Quick Disconnect Couplings are labor saving devices, which expedite the connection and disconnection of Hydraulic , Pneumatic and Fluid Transfer components and hoses.
SELECTION FACTORS FOR QUICK CONNECT COUPLINGS
Quick Couplings are components of a fluid system and are thereby subject to all system forces.
Mayor considerations:
Flow
System flow rate is one of the most valuable pieces of information needed and yet it often misunderstood. When design considerations are being made for coupling size and internal valving, system designers should always strive to minimize pressure drop to avoid inefficiency in the system.
Pressure
Pressure is the single most important factor in the development of QC. Pressure influences virtually all of the components in QC and the mis-application of a product to an improper pressure application can lead to design disastrous results.
Air Inclusion/ Spillage
Air inclusion is defined as the small amount of air infiltration into a system when a coupling is connected. Here again this test only applies to couplings that seal at the interface before the valves are open.
Spillage is defined as the small amount of fluid that is lost when a coupling is disconnected, not be confused with leakage.
Temperature & Media
The temperature and media can have a dramatic impact on the design of the product. This generally takes the form of material selection of the base metal and elastomers used to make the coupling.
Environment
In the context of a quick coupling, environmental factors not only refer to contamination issue but also the conditions in which the coupling is used.
Conditions of certain death:
Rotation
A small rotation of a few degrees is no problem. 360 degrees or more can lead to a disfunctional coupling, due galling.
Vibratie
High vibration can lead to dangerous situations even in low pressure applications.
Contamination
To avoid the contamination of dust, sand etcetera use dust plugs and dust caps in disconnect condition.
Side load
The couplings always has to be straight in line with the nipple, if not some leakage can appaer.
